Third Sunday after Epiphany

The Centurion Beseeching Christ on Behalf of his Servant at the Monastery of Saint John in Müstair (CH) (ca. 800)

This Sunday’s Gospel tells the story of two healings, that of the leper and that of the Centurion’s servant. Stories of Christ healing figure prominently in early Christian and early Medieval art and less prominently into the early modern era; nevertheless, the Healing of the Leper and The Healing of the Centurion’s Servant are relatively rare. Here is a Carolingian-era fresco in which Christ accompanied by three apostles stands framed within an arch and blesses/speaks to the Centurion who kneels before him. The paralyzed servant sits above to the right on a tilted mandorla.
