Chapter LIII – The boys enter the province of the Auvergne, to Clermont-Ferrand in the département of Puy-de-Dôme, where they learn about puys, the volcanic formations particular to the region, and the most famous among them, the Puy de Dôme. They discuss the other département, Cantal, it Salers cows, and its chief city, Aurillac.

Chapter LIV – Julien walks around Clermont-Ferrand. The boys taste candied fruit from Limagne and discuss the life of a merchant.

Chapter LV – Back in the département of Puy-de-Dôme, the boys arrive in Thiers, which is known for its cutlery. They also discuss the plates on which a dinner was served from Limoges in the neighboring province of Limousin, and Guillaume Dupuytren, who was born near Limoges.

Chapter LVI – The boys and the merchant stay at a farm outside of Thiers, where Julien befriends another orphan boy.

Chapter LVIII – Julien continues reading from his book about more great men of the Auvergne – Michel de l’Hôpital and Louis Charles Antoine Desaix.
