Picture Study & Liturgical Living Synchronization – September

Here is simply the barest outline of what I hope eventually to develop into a study guide for a course of Picture Study that accompanies the Sanctorale, the calendar of saint’s feast days. For each saint, I also provide one or two modern hagiographical works, usually written for children, about that saint. As with everything on this site, it follows the Traditional Catholic calendar. One day, I plan to prepare a single PDF file for each work of art, containing an image for printing, a story of the depicted saint found in the public domain, and art historical background. In the meantime, you can download the picture files and PDF files directly from their sources. As a rule, the later the work, the more accessible it is, especially for the younger student. Sometimes you can relate the picture directly to a text. Sometimes a picture tells its own story.

Fort Christina

Wilmington, Delaware was the site of the first Swedish settlement in the New World, Fort Christina. The first Swedes arrived in 1638, but by 1655, the Fort was surrendered to the Dutch and then came under English rule in 1664.

You may read a transcript of the Observance of the Three Hundredth Anniversary of the First Permanent Settlement in the Delaware River Valley 1938, including the remarks of the Swedish Crown Prince and President Roosevelt. Fort Christina is today a National Park, and you can sail aboard a reconstructed Kalmar Nyckel, one of the two ships that first brought settlers from Sweden to the New World. The Kalmar Nyckel Youtube Channel has some science lessons relating to ships.

The Old Swedes Historic Site includes the church built by the Swedish settlers at the end of the 17th century. You may read more about the church here and watch a tour of the church here.

Winterthur

In the early 20th century, Henry Francis du Pont, great nephew of Alexis du Pont, built Winterthur, today a museum and garden. The WinterthurMuse Youtube Channel shares many videos, and you can explore the online database of the Winterthur Museum Collections.

Howard Pyle and the Brandywine School
