Carolingian Fresco of Saint John the Baptist Sending His Disciples to Christ to Ask “Art thou he that art to come, or look we for another?” in the center apse of the Church of Saint John the Baptist in Müstair, Switzerland.
Today’s Gospel reading, Matthew 11.2-10, is a rare subject in Medieval and Renaissance art, but a monastery church in the Swiss Alps, constructed and painted around the year 800, preserves an endearing depiction of Saint John the Baptist in a prison cell resembling a shower stall, as he sends his two disciples to Christ to ask if He is the one to come. The church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, and the center apse presents the story of his life, the later part of his life with Romanesque frescoes still covering the original Carolingian.
