Fourth Sunday in Advent

Luke 3.1-6

This week we may look at any general depiction of Saint John the Baptist Preaching, but there is a visual clue in paintings that refer to this precise moment in the inclusion of a motif that comes from John’s words in this same location and just a few verses after today’s reading – “For now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit, shall be cut down and cast into the fire” (Luke 3.9). A Renaissance Italian painter better known for his painting of wedding chests painted two such scenes –

Jacopo de Sellaio, Saint John the Baptist (ca. 1480) – the inscription on the banderole around the cross conveys Saint John the Baptist’s words – ANIUS DEI – but at the far left edge (detail above), there is an axe stuck into the trunk of the tree.

And, Jacopo de Sellaio, Saint John the Baptist (ca. 1485), but here the axe is stuck into the tree at the right edge of the painting.
