The city of Luzern/Lucerne began as a Benedictine Monastery dedicated to Saint Maurice, and the church was subsequently dedicated to Saint Leodegar. A website maintained by the Familie Gerhard Eichinger presents the most complete history available in English, a translation of a 19th-century German text – Court Church (Hofkirche). The angel above shining the lamp upon the construction refers to the derivation of the name of the city from this shining monastery – Monasterium Luciaria.

The German Wikipedia entry on the church provides more details about Abbot Wichard – “Im Jahre 800 ging das kleine Kloster unter, bis es durch Abt Wichard im Jahre 850 wieder unter die Regel des Heiligen Benedikt gestellt wurde” – and about the church building as it would have been by the early 16th century – “Über die Anfänge der Hofkirche kann nichts gesagt werden, weil keine archäologischen Erkenntnisse vorliegen. Urkundlich ist einzig belegt, dass in der zweiten Hälfte vom 9. Jahrhundert eine Kirche mit Vorhalle bestanden haben muss. In der zweiten Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts wurde eine romanische Anlage mit zwei Türmen errichtet.
