“The iconographic research undertaken in 2007 by Magali Philippe, Curator at the Brou Museum, identifies the male figures more closely with Saint Augustine of Hippo (the child at his feet, calling him with his outstretched hand, refers to the child that Saint Augustine had seen on a beach, trying to empty the sea water with an empty shell) and Saint Facond of Sahagun (Augustinian monk of the 15th century who saw Christ appear to him during his masses. This is why he is represented with a chalice containing the Child Jesus).”
